LIUNA Leader, Dennis L., Martire, Creates Change In Mid-Atlantic Area

Dennis Martire

Dennis Martire is not one of those leaders who sit behind a desk and let others accomplish the job. Rather, he’s the type of leader who creates waves; the type of man who cultivates change for those individuals that he serves. Martire has acted within the role of vice president and regional manager of the mid-Atlantic region for the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) since 2002. And more than once within this job, Martire has not just had to, but wanted to create positive change for the laborers in his served region.

One such example is his leadership in creating a new labor union chapter. Several years ago, Martire was key in an initiative to begin LIUNA Local 11, a member chapter for the workers on Fluor-Lane’s expansion of Route 495 Hot Lanes Project. He provided them a choice about bringing together a union or continuing with their working environment as-is. Those workers recognized the importance of banding together in a unionized workforce and voted overwhelmingly to be members of Local 11. For the state of Virginia, this choice of representation by more than 200 workers on this project was highlighted as one of the largest union victories on record in the construction industry. Martire was and remains proud to be instrumental in the leadership that made this happen.
